By the expediency of restricting my reading of the last 60 pages or so to chapter titles only, I have at last finished Oman, Under Arabian Skies by Rory Patrick Allen. I’m still not entirely clear what it was that Mr Allen did during his time in “this exotic land”. He hints at having taught English but is no great shakes at the language himself, managing to change tenses in the middle of sentences. And despite all the historical gubbins knocking about Muscat & Nizwa he seems more interested in describing traffic roundabouts.

It is then with great relief that I return to J.G. Farrell and the second book in his Empire trilogy, The Siege of Krishnapur. It’s funny but it ain’t It Ain’t Half Hot Mum if you know what I mean.
